Carlex Glass to Shutter Vonore Plant, Consolidating Operations in Nashville After Historic Tax Incentives

VONORE, TN Carlex Glass America announced it will close its manufacturing facility in Vonore by this September, a move that will displace roughly 320 local employees. The closure marks the end of an era for a plant that has been a foundational part of Monroe County’s industrial base for more than 30 years.

The decision to shutter the Vonore plant is driven by a broader corporate realignment to adjust to shifting market conditions and customer demands. Rather than maintaining the East Tennessee operation, Carlex is consolidating and expanding its advanced manufacturing footprint at its Nashville headquarters, which recently saw a $55 million investment to build next-generation production lines.

The closure represents a significant economic blow to the region, prompting local leaders to rapidly mobilize to assist the displaced workforce.

Carlex Glass America operates as a major Tier 1 supplier within the automotive sector. The Vonore facility served as a fully integrated glass fabrication operation. For decades, the plant has produced high-quality windshields, sidelites, and backlites for some of the world’s leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), including Ford, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, and Subaru. The company specializes in taking raw materials and processing them into the precision-formed glass components essential to modern vehicle design and safety.

The Nashville PILOT Program and Corporate Realignment

While the Vonore plant has anchored Monroe County’s workforce for over 30 years, Carlex’s corporate focus has increasingly shifted toward its Davidson County campus in Nashville. The groundwork for this long-term shift can be traced back to a critical economic incentive package awarded to the company over a decade ago.

In June 2011, the Metro Nashville government approved a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement for Carlex’s Nashville property (Ordinance BL2011-941). Rather than benefiting the Vonore facility, this specific pilot program was designed to secure and stimulate the company’s Nashville operations.

The original deal provided substantial tax relief to the glass manufacturer:

• Carlex received a 60% tax abatement on Real Property for a duration of 5 years.
• The company also received a 50% abatement on Personal Property for a period of 3 years.
• In exchange, the deal was expected to retain 400 existing jobs and add 50 new jobs.
• The incentive proved highly successful for the Nashville area; by the end of 2016, the facility reported 763 jobs.
• When the five-year PILOT agreement expired at the end of 2016, Carlex exercised its option to purchase back the property and equipment from the Industrial Development Board for a nominal amount of $100.

Today, the momentum generated by those historic incentives has culminated in a massive expansion of the Nashville campus. Carlex is moving forward with a $55 million project in Nashville that will create 143 high-skill jobs and equip the facility with the only end-to-end precision-formed automotive glass process of its kind in North America. While this signifies a technological leap for the company’s headquarters, it unfortunately seals the fate of the historic Vonore plant and its dedicated workforce.
