MARYVILLE LEADS THREE AREA DISTRICTS IN SHARE OF STUDENTS MEETING TENNESSEE STANDARDS

On June 24, 2026 the Tennessee Department of Education released the 2025–26 TCAP state-level results, showing continued statewide improvement in student proficiency across multiple subjects.

What “Meets or Exceeds” means in TCAP testing Tennessee’s TCAP assessments sort student performance into four achievement levels: Below, Approaching, Meets, and Exceeds.

• Meets = the student demonstrates grade‑level proficiency and is on track academically.
• Exceeds = the student shows advanced mastery, performing above grade level expectations.

When the state reports that proficiency “meets or exceeds,” it is counting all students who reached either of these two top tiers — meaning they are performing at or above the expected level for their grade.

STATE LEVEL RESULTS

Looking at the STATE LEVEL results, Third‑grade ELA reached its highest level since at least 2017, and fourth‑grade math saw notable gains. The report highlights increases in proficiency in ELA, math, and social studies, with science excluded this year due to standard-setting.

Key statewide gains:

• ELA:
  • +3.2 points for 3rd grade
  • +2.7 points for 8th grade
  • +3.8 points for English II
• Math:
  • +3.6 points for 4th grade
  • +5.6 points for high‑school Geometry
• Social Studies:
  • +11.4 points statewide since 2019
  • +3–4 point gains in grades 6, 7, and U.S. History

State leaders credit the progress to post‑pandemic learning recovery laws, early literacy initiatives, summer learning camps, high‑dosage tutoring, and expanded professional development for educators. The department emphasizes that gains are appearing not only in early grades but also in middle school achievement.

Looking ahead, TDOE is promoting summer math trainings and literacy instruction workshops to continue momentum. Officials express confidence that sustained investment in teacher training and student supports will keep proficiency rising statewide.

BLOUNT COUNTY AREA THREE SCHOOL DISTRICT RESULTS

Maryville students outpaced neighboring Alcoa and Blount County school systems in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding Tennessee state standards, according to newly released 2026 assessment results summarized in the workbook.

The results show Maryville ahead across the major all-grades subject summaries. In English language arts, 67.0% of Maryville students met or exceeded standards, compared with 50.6% in Alcoa and 40.7% in Blount County. In math, Maryville posted 67.3%, ahead of Alcoa at 54.2% and Blount County at 37.7%. Social studies was the strongest overall category for all three systems, with Maryville at 72.9%, Alcoa at 65.3% and Blount County at 52.6%.

The elementary grades showed a similar pattern. For grades 3 through 5, Maryville recorded 70.0% in overall ELA and 75.4% in overall math. Alcoa followed with 56.3% in overall ELA and 62.3% in overall math, while Blount County reported 43.0% and 44.9%, respectively.

In middle grades, Maryville also led the three-system comparison, with 61.1% meeting or exceeding standards in overall ELA, 67.1% in overall math and 73.9% in overall social studies. Alcoa posted 41.2%, 53.6% and 65.3% in those categories, while Blount County posted 34.9%, 36.0% and 51.1%.

High school results were more varied by course, though Maryville remained ahead in the overall categories shown. For grades 9 through 12, Maryville recorded 71.3% in overall ELA, 58.5% in overall math and 68.0% in overall social studies. Alcoa posted 56.7% in overall ELA and 47.1% in overall math, while Blount County posted 46.5% in overall ELA, 31.5% in overall math and 58.2% in overall social studies.

Some course-level results showed especially high performance. Geometry stood out in ninth grade, with 98.3% of Maryville students, 96.6% of Alcoa students and 95.9% of Blount County students meeting or exceeding standards. Maryville also posted strong all-grades results in English II at 82.4% and Algebra II at 69.1%.

The release also highlights gaps among the systems. Across all grades, Maryville led Blount County by 26.3 percentage points in overall ELA and 29.6 points in overall math. Alcoa led Blount County by 9.9 points in overall ELA and 16.5 points in overall math.

The figures represent the percentage of tested students who met or exceeded Tennessee state standards. Some entries in the underlying data are blank or suppressed, meaning not every grade-and-subject combination is available for every system.
