CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — July 22, 2026 — Erlanger Health System and Prisma Health announced today the signing of a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI) to form a strategic partnership. The proposed agreement includes a monumental $2 billion strategic capital investment aimed at expanding access to specialized care, protecting safety-net operations, and establishing a new East Tennessee regional headquarters in Chattanooga.
The Details of the Announcement
Under the proposed terms, current Erlanger President and CEO Jim Coleman will assume the role of Regional CEO for East Tennessee. Prisma Health’s President and CEO, Mark S. O’Halla, stated that the partnership will ensure Erlanger has the expertise to serve its communities at the highest level for decades while securing its historical legacy.
The agreement prioritizes job security and local governance. The Erlanger brand name will be retained, and all employees and medical staff in good standing will keep their positions. To integrate the systems while maintaining local influence, Erlanger will hold a majority of seats on a newly established Prisma Health Eastern Tennessee board, as well as representation on Prisma Health’s corporate board. The decision to partner was the result of an extensive evaluation led by the Erlanger Board of Directors, including Chair Barry Large and Immediate Past-Chair Sheila Boyington, who emphasized that Prisma Health’s culturally compatible, patient-first focus set them apart from other national systems.
Erlanger’s History and Tennessee Footprint
This $2 billion investment builds upon Erlanger’s deep historical roots in the region. Founded more than 130 years ago through an extraordinary community gift, Erlanger has grown into a massive private, non-profit health system affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine.
Operating as a seven-hospital system, it serves as the sole provider of tertiary care across a 50,000-square-mile region encompassing southeast Tennessee, northwest Georgia, north Alabama, and western North Carolina. Its critical safety-net operations include the region’s only Level I Trauma Center, a comprehensive Children’s Hospital, a Level IV NICU, a kidney transplant center, 24/7 stroke care, and a medical fleet of six helicopters.
Impacts on Prisma Blount Memorial Hospital and Blount County Citizens
For the citizens of Blount County, this Chattanooga-centric partnership signals a major shift in East Tennessee’s healthcare power dynamics. Since Prisma Health officially integrated Blount Memorial Hospital in late 2024, the Maryville facility has served as the system’s primary footprint in the state. However, designating Chattanooga as the new East Tennessee regional headquarters effectively transitions Prisma Blount Memorial Hospital into a northern satellite of a much larger network.
The $2 billion in strategic capital is explicitly earmarked for Erlanger’s infrastructure, including improvements to the Erlanger East Hospital campus and Erlanger Baroness Hospital. As a result, future modernization or expansion projects in Blount County will likely face stiffer internal competition for corporate funding.
Furthermore, governance over all East Tennessee operations—including Blount Memorial—will now be steered by the newly created Prisma Health Eastern Tennessee board, which will be heavily influenced by Chattanooga leadership. While this clinical integration could provide Maryville residents with streamlined referral access to Erlanger’s advanced pediatric care and Level I Trauma Center, local oversight and corporate accountability will now be centralized nearly 100 miles away.
